
IH Online Course in Teaching Young Learners & Teenagers
This course is ideal for teachers new to working with Young Learners and Teenagers (ages 6 to 17), as well as for those looking to develop their skills and deepen their understanding of how to teach this age group effectively.
As a teacher, you aim to create engaging, enjoyable lessons that help younger students learn and succeed. This course is designed to support and inspire you by building your confidence, offering practical classroom ideas, and strengthening your teaching techniques—both in-person and online.
The course reflects the realities of today’s teaching environment, offering tools for remote learning as well as face-to-face settings. It is fully online, moderated by Cambridge Assessment English, and delivered exclusively by International House.
Who Is The Course Designed For?
This course is suitable for:
- Newly qualified or experienced teachers who want to gain a certificate in teaching Young Learners and Teenagers
- Teachers lacking access to in-house training, local mentors, or YL classroom observation opportunities
- Teachers already working with ages 6–17 who want to expand their practical skills and refresh their approach
Even if you’re currently teaching YLs, this course will help you motivate and engage them more effectively.
This course is moderated by Cambridge Assessment English. Your certificate will include the Cambridge logo, adding value to your qualification.
Content of the IH Online Course in Teaching Young Learners & Teenagers
The course is divided into seven core modules, plus a final assignment. Topics include:
- Understanding young learners and how they learn
- Classroom management strategies
- Language practice, materials, and correction techniques
- Teaching new language effectively
- Developing speaking and listening skills
- Enhancing reading and writing skills
- Focusing on learner needs
- Final reflective assignment
Modules also feature online video observations of real YL classes.
You’ll also have access to optional live sessions scheduled during the course. These will be recorded for those unable to attend live. Planned sessions include:
- Starting out with online YL teaching (after Module 2)
- Delivering language-focused online lessons
- Teaching skills-based lessons online
- Q&A and teaching tips session
How is the course delivered?
The course is asynchronous, allowing you to access the materials at your own pace. This flexibility makes it ideal for those balancing other commitments or located in different time zones.
Optional live sessions are offered, but you can also watch recordings if you cannot attend. Tutors will support and guide you throughout the course, and you will progress together with your cohort.
The discussion forums play a key role, offering a space to share ideas, reflect on experiences, and build an online teaching community with your peers.
Entry requirements
To join, you should have a basic teaching qualification. You don’t need prior experience with 6–17-year-olds. Your English level should be C1 or higher.
Duration
There are seven weeks of tutor led input on this course. After this you will complete your assignment and have one week to complete and submit your portfolio of work ready for assessment.
Your time commitment
The time commitment may differ from person to person, but you should plan for at least 5 to 7 hours per week. While study hours are flexible, certain tasks involve group work and have fixed deadlines. The more time you invest in the course, the more you will gain from it.
Your fellow course participants and online community
Group sizes typically range from 12 to 18 participants. The shared experience of learning alongside peers is one of the most valued aspects of the course. You’ll exchange ideas, explore new teaching approaches, and build confidence for your own classroom.
This course is not just self-study—it’s about learning together with others and drawing on shared experiences.
Assesment
Each module includes tasks that will be reviewed by your tutors. At the end of the course, you’ll complete a final assignment reflecting on what you’ve learned.
Your portfolio of work (weekly tasks + final assignment) will be submitted to the IHWO Assessment Unit and then externally moderated by Cambridge Assessment English.
Participation is key, and your final result will be Pass/Fail.
Your verified digital certificate
Upon successful completion, you’ll receive a verified digital certificate stored on a secure platform. This certificate includes the Cambridge Assessment English logo.
