IH Teaching One-to-one Course
The newly refreshed Teaching One-to-One course prepares you to effectively teach individual students both online and in person.
Demand for one-to-one teaching is rising—especially online—as students increasingly value the convenience of flexible scheduling, time-saving from travel, and personalized instruction tailored to their needs.
Is Teaching One-to-One for me?
- This course is ideal if:
- You’ve taught one-to-one before and want to enhance your skills
- You’re new to one-to-one teaching and want to build confidence and capability
- You have at least C1-level English
- You can commit approximately 5 hours per week to your studies
While actively teaching one-to-one during the course is helpful, it is not a requirement.
Throughout the course, you’ll also collaborate with a diverse, international group of fellow participants, sharing insights and ideas.
Teaching One-to-One is a blended online course
This course blends live online sessions with asynchronous self-study. There are no in-person components, and learners worldwide are welcome.
Each week features a 90-minute live session, which is recorded for those who can’t attend. However, it’s highly recommended that you join these sessions live.
The rest of the weekly content is available online for flexible access. Each week includes self-paced tasks and forum discussions. Tutors provide support and feedback throughout the course.
Live sessions are provisionally set for Mondays at 1:00 PM (UK time), though this may be adjusted depending on group and tutor availability.
Course Details
Teaching individuals is very different from group instruction. Simply repeating group lessons often falls short, and lessons may unintentionally become unfocused conversations if not structured properly.
This course will equip you with targeted techniques to sustain learner motivation and help students meet specific goals or develop general skills.
You’ll learn to create well-structured, personalized lesson plans that account for your students’ goals and learning gaps—some of which they may not even be aware of.
One-to-one students often need more customized materials and a different dynamic compared to group learners. This course teaches how to make effective use of various platforms and resources, while maintaining a clear sense of progress for your students.
Whether you’re looking to work independently, freelance, or expand your teaching options, this course can open doors. For school managers, offering one-to-one instruction is cost-effective and expands reach—especially online. Qualified one-to-one teachers can also help boost enrolments.

Assessment & certificate
-
There are four assessments you need to complete throughout the course. These will be evaluated and graded by your tutor. Active participation is also a key part of the course and contributes to your final result. The course is graded on a pass/fail basis.
All certificates are issued digitally and stored on a verified, registered platform. This ensures that any potential employer, client, or other recipient you choose to share your certificate with can trust its authenticity. It will look like this ;
- This makes everything as simple and straightforward as possible for you. A digital certificate is safer and more secure than a paper one — it won’t be lost in the mail, damaged over time, or misplaced. It’s always accessible, can be shared with a single click, and you can print as many copies as you like, whenever you need. Plus, it’s more environmentally friendly. Using less paper, ink, and shipping reduces your carbon footprint.
